Stefan Stambolov (1854–1895) served 1886-1894 initially as regent and then key minister for the new ruler, Ferdinand I of Bulgaria (prince 1887–1908, tsar 1908–1918). Stambolov believed that Russia's liberation of Bulgaria from Turkish rule were an endeavor by Czarist Russia to turn Bulgaria into its protectorate. His plan was characterized f
